Interview  fo “Interior the best”

What’s the most life-affirming story in your work?

-Every next job is a new life-affirming story for me, the last one is always the most)

What is the most dramatic story in your work?

-This year 2022 has put me, for the first time in my life, in a dramatic state that I have never experienced before, literally paralyzed.

Why did you become a sculptor and why can’t you not be one?

-In my case I felt destined to become a sculptor at a very early age, from the age of 2.5 I was sculpting, at five I said I would be a sculptor and joined the studio, at 11 I entered the Moscow Art School and then the Surikov Institute.

It’s difficult to explain why in the flow of state, joy and satisfaction, a sense of meaningfulness of the day I get only when I model, or draw sketches for future works, it’s probably so I am arranged. Without creativity I begin to stunt and lose meaning, I just need it for a sense of fullness, joy, self-fulfillment.

Is the sculptor a status, profitable profession now?

-In a free and cultured modern society, definitely yes

Each author, of course, has his own way, destiny. In my case, life itself leads. As long as I remember, I do only creative work and earn money realizing projects that interest me

Is there an element of unpredictability in your work? If yes, does it scare you or make you happy?

-Yes, there is both in the creative and technical parts of it, it’s an interesting process of learning and experimentation, sometimes a bit protracted).

At first there is groping for that shaky and sometimes elusive image, which begs to go out in the soft material, and when you achieve its recognition, it leads to a state of great joy and satisfaction.

Then comes the time of technical realization and here too there are many interesting and not always predictable moments, even different bronze compositions give different patina shades etc.

I am fascinated and excited by the whole process, from the first sketches to the realization in the material.

Which creative material is yours and why? – Its pros and cons.

-My favorite material for modeling, sculpture creation is clay, it is an amazing tactile living substance.

For the subsequent bronze implementation it gives the greatest plastic freedom, detailing, texture, patina.

Is manual work a burden or a benefit?

-In my case a blessing. I draw, sculpt, make my own works in soft material, supervise the process, do finishing and artistic toning, all this is easy for me to enjoy. There is a lot of men’s work physically and technically difficult, which helps me a team of specialists, molders, welders, casters, etc.

Any new ideas for creativity at the moment?

Yes, of course there are )

Are you an artist and a businessman combined?

I think they do, although I don’t like to sell my works, but from an early age I was able to organize all sorts of processes

Me and Sergei (Sculptor-designer Sergei Sobolev) my companion and partner in all projects, we constantly organized, built, opened commercial and non-commercial firms, did many Russian and foreign projects, exhibitions, organized processes to implement their ideas, and this definitely requires the ability to interact with customers, developers, galleries, architects, etc. And to implement projects you need to know the whole technological process thoroughly, to be able to manage it, to interact with the team and so on

However, the creative part of the work – it is a sacred process, there awakens some other deep side of the personality, I for example, work only alone and often in absolute silence)
